Cantu, Mickelboro named LETU Athletes of the Year

The LeTourneau University athletic department honored its spring sports athletes at its 2012 Spring Banquet Program last week.

The coaches of LeTourneau's eight spring sports honored their respective award winners at the banquet. The department also announced the winners of its Scholar-Athlete awards, Athlete of the Year awards and Roger Erickstad Christian Leadership Award.

Senior tennis player Carlos Cantu was honored as the Male Athlete of the Year and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Senior softball player Christin Mickelboro was named the department's Female Athlete of the Year, while senior soccer player Nicole Tammelin was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Erickstad Award is given annually by the YellowJacket Booster Club to the student-athlete who portrays Christian leadership in the community, on campus, in the classroom and in athletics. The 2012 award was given to women's basketball player La'Queda Davis.

Cantu, a member of the men's tennis team, went 15-5 as LeTourneau's flight one singles player. Cantu also teamed with Josh Bailey to go 12-6 in flight one doubles competition.

After four seasons with the LeTourneau softball team, Mickelboro has etched her name in the school record books. The Longview native finishes her athletic tenure as the career leader in nine offensive categories, including batting average (.417), home runs (30), RBIs (137) and slugging percentage (.744).

Tammelin, a women's soccer player from Vestal, N.Y., was a four-year letterwinner with the YellowJackets. She was the starting goalkeeper for three seasons before a hip injury moved her to the field for her senior season in 2011. Tammelin ranks second all-time in wins at LeTourneau.

Davis, a four-year letterwinner, graduated in 2011 and began graduate classes at LeTourneau while competing as a senior. She averaged nearly eight points per game during her career.
