With 14 seconds to go before halftime, MaKayla Forsberg of UTD found the back of the net for what proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win over the LeTourneau University women's soccer team in the quarterfinals of the ASC Tournament on Tuesday in Richardson.
The YellowJackets (8-8-1), who were making just their third tournament appearance and first since 2006, rallied from an early 1-0 deficit when junior
Stephanie Vana countered in the 27th minute on a free kick that sailed past the diving UTD goalkeeper.
The Comets (14-7) got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when Jessica Rusk scored from 15 yards out just underneath the reach of the LETU goalkeeper.
?"I'm very thankful to the Lord giving me such a wonderful group of young ladies to coach and for the opportunity here at LeTourneau," said LETU head coach
John Antonisse. "We tried to bring home a win but just came up short."
LETU took nine shots including three on goal in the loss with Vana accounting for a team-high four shots. Junior goalkeeper
Brittany Hollis came off the bench to play the final 45 minutes, made three saves as well as she kept the UTD off the scoreboard. LETU had a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.
UTD had 25 shots for the contest including eight on goal, plus Comets goalkeeper Monica Dallacasa had two saves.
There is a promising future ahead for LeTourneau, who loses two seniors –
Kaitlynn Conway and
Jenny Heidt.
The loss ends the season for LeTourneau; meanwhile, UTD will advance to the semifinals to face No. 1 seed UT Tyler on Friday at 11 a.m. on the campus of Hardin-Simmons in Abilene.
