LeTourneau Softball Begins ASC Play with Doubleheader Split with Howard Payne

The LeTourneau University softball team split a doubleheader with Howard Payne, (W, 8-0 – Game 1 – 5 innings) (L, 6-4 – Game 2 – 8 innings).

LETU (5-2, 1-1 ASC) pounded out 14 hits in the game one victory and sophomore starting pitcher Courtney Matulis held HPU to just two hits. All eight of the LETU runs came with two outs. The 14-hit attack saw five-different players – Megan Hill, Kelsie Benson, Kaylee Pritchett, Haley Rhine and Brittany Avila – have two hits. Benson finished with three RBI and Avila had two RBI.

Howard Payne starter Celese Tirres went all 4.2 innings, allowing 14 hits, eight runs – five earned and striking out one in the loss. Matulis picked up her first win of the season for LETU, striking out three and allowing just three base runners.

Howard Payne (3-3, 1-1 ASC) scored twice in the top of the eighth for the win and withstood a comeback attempt by LETU in the third inning. LeTourneau scored twice in the first inning for an early 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single by Kaylee Pritchett. HPU took its first lead on its first runs of the doubleheader, scoring four times on three hits for a 4-2 lead in the top of the 3rd.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the third, three-straight singles by LeTourneau cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Next, a sacrifice fly by Benson tied the game at 4.  LeTourneau stranded a base runner in the fifth and seventh to send the game into extra innings. HPU scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth on the three hits, capitalizing on a pair of errors by LETU. Despite a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth, HPU closed out the contest for the win.
Tirres came back to win the nightcap with a five inning relief stint, allowing just two hits and striking out three. LETU reliever Kaylee Pritchett was the tough-luck loser after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out three for her first loss of the season.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with an 11 a.m. matchup as part of Heart Day at the LETU Softball Field in recognition of Walker Sherrard.
