LETU Softball Takes Two from Sul Ross State

The LeTourneau University softball team swept a doubleheader from host Sul Ross State, 15-2 and 8-7 on Monday in Alpine.

The YellowJackets (14-19, 9-16 ASC) scored in every inning of game one en route to the 15-2 win. LeTourneau jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first inning and secured the run-rule victory in the fifth inning with a six-run effort to end the contest.

The LETU offense was led by the three-hit effort from Rachel Gauspohl and four teammates – Megan Hill, Brittany Avila, Courtney Matulis and Brianna Williams – each added two in the rout. Matulis added three RBI; plus Hill, Kelsie Benson and Ashley Burdine each drove in two.

In the circle for the YellowJackets', Matulis went all five innings in the complete game win to improve to 4-8. She allowed six hits, two runs (two earned) and struck out one.

In game two, LeTourneau picked up where it left off in game one as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead en route to the 8-7 win over the host Lobos. Four YellowJackets – Avila, Gauspohl, Benson and Matulis – had two hits in the nightcap. Plus, Gauspohl and Benson each drove in a pair in the win. LETU reliever Kaylee Pritchett pitched the final 6.1 innings, scattering nine hits and five runs (one earned) and struck out two in the win to improve to 5-9.

LeTourneau scored a run in the first for an early 1-0 lead before Sul Ross State answered with two in its half of the first for its first lead of the doubleheader. The YellowJackets quickly answered with three runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. LETU plated two runs in the third and fourth innings to stretch the lead to 8-2.

Sul Ross State cut into the lead, scoring a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth for an 8-5 deficit. Then, the Lobos mounted a late rally in the seventh when they scored two and had the tying run on first when the game ended.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a contest at noon on Tuesday.
