The LeTourneau University softball team split a doubleheader with Concordia University, winning game one – 7-4 and losing game two – 8-2 on Saturday at the LETU Softball Field.
The YellowJackets (16-20, 10-17 ASC) took game one on the strength of three home runs, including a walk-off, three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh by junior
Megan Hill. Earlier in the game, in the first inning,
Rachel Gauspohl and
Kelsie Benson hit back-to-back solo home runs for an early 2-0 lead. Hill finished the game with four RBI as she also had a RBI ground out in the fifth.
The Tornados (8-28, 8-20 ASC) scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4. Concordia spread 13 hits among nine players with Brooke Jones recording a team-best three in the loss.
LeTourneau starting pitcher
Courtney Matulis went the distance for the complete game, allowing four runs (four earned) and striking out three in the win to improve to 6-8. For Matulis, it was her sixth complete game of the season.
In the nightcap, Concordia had 13 hits for a second-straight game and scored five times in the fifth en route to an 8-2 win over the YellowJackets. The YellowJackets were limited to seven hits, including two from the hot hitting Hill and two from Benson.
Concordia got three hits from Amanda Allard, two from Amanda Sigala-Lopez, Brooke Jones and Amber Robinson in the win. Allard picked up the win for the Tornados, allowing seven hits, two runs (two earned).
Kaylee Pritchett for LeTourneau was the losing pitcher, allowing 11 hits, seven runs (six earned) and striking out three.
Between games of the doubleheader, LeTourneau University softball recognized its two seniors –
Kaylee Pritchett and
Erin Paterson. Both have made significant contributions to the YellowJackets softball program on and off the field.
