A sacrifice fly by Laura Gulotta-Parrish was just enough to lead Louisiana College to a 5-4 win past LeTourneau University in the American Southwest Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday.
Â
LeTourneau (17-21) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game, scoring twice in the fourth and sixth inning. LETU designated player
Brianna Williams had three RBI and two runs scored to lead the YellowJackets. Reliever
Kaylee Pritchett pitched the final 6.1 innings in the loss, scattering five hits and an unearned run in the loss to fall to 5-11.
Â
Louisiana College (27-11) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first inning. Two of the four runs came in on a two-run home run by Gulotta-Parrish. Mattie Stine had three of the nine hits for the Wildcats. Reliever Darian Thacker pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and two runs (two earned) and two strike outs in the win.
Â
Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning,
Rachel Gauspohl started the inning with a double. After a ground out, she came around to score on an error by the Wildcats to cut the deficit to 4-1. Then,
Kelsi Coleman doubled to left, scoring
Brianna Williams from first to make it a 4-2 contest. LeTourneau tied it in the sixth on a one-out, two-run home run by Williams. In the seventh, Louisiana College loaded the bases for Parrish, who hit a one-out fly ball to center field. The relay by the YellowJackets came up short and the Wildcats prevailed with the one-run victory.
Â
With the loss, LeTourneau heads to the consolation bracket and will face Hardin-Simmons on Friday at 1 p.m. at SuddenLink Field in an elimination game. Hardin-Simmons, who is the No. 4 seed, dropped a 4-2 decision. In the three-game series, earlier this year, HSU took two out of three from the YellowJackets.
