Host UT Tyler scored four times each in the 4
th and 5
th inning to spoil the upset bid by the LeTourneau University softball team on Saturday afternoon in Tyler.
The YellowJackets (19-21), who overcame two elimination games on Friday, reached the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time in program history. LeTourneau was limited to a pair of hits by Alaina Kissinger and UT Tyler. Kissinger pitched a complete game and struck out seven to raise her record to 14-0.
The Patriots (38-2) spread eight hits among seven-different players as Mel Hinojosa paced the attack with two hits in the win. Pinch-hitter Kristin Lopez ended a scoreless tie in the fifth with a grand slam for the 4-0 lead. Raven Rodriguez and Hinojosa each scored twice in the win.
