A RBI single in the top of the seventh by Heather Gilbert for UT Dallas was just enough to lead the Comets past the LeTourneau University softball team, 1-0 on Friday evening in Longview.
UT Dallas (10-5, 7-0) ended the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh. With one out, shortstop Kendall Moore doubled to left field for her second hit of the contest. Then, shortstop Heather Gilbert brought in Moore from second on a RBI single, who just got across the plate ahead of the throw.
LeTourneau (4-11, 2-8) put its first two runners on board in its half of the seventh when sophomore
Bailey Woodard and junior pinch hitter
Kaitlyn Allen was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Then, a sacrifice bunt by junior
Whitney Judd moved Woodard and pinch runner
Madison Moynahan to second and third, respectively.
The Comets' starting pitcher Lauren McLeod got out of the jam with a pop out and ground out to secure the shutout win in the series opener. The win for McLeod improves her to 6-2 and for the YellowJackets' senior
Kayla Cosby is the losing pitcher, falling to 3-4.
In the loss, LeTourneau stranded eight base runners and had six-different players with a hit. For UT Dallas, Moore and Gilbert each had two hits to lead a seven-hit attack.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
