RICHARDSON, Texas – A goal with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation would find the LeTourneau University women's soccer team on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss to the University of Texas-Dallas at the UTD Soccer Field in Richardson, Texas on Thursday, October 26th.
The loss leaves the YellowJackets at 8-6-3 overall and 4-5-2 in the American Southwest Conference while the host Comets picked up their 14th win of the year to improve to 14-3 overall and 9-2 in the ASC.
"I am extremely proud of the team" said head coach
John Antonisse in a post-game interview. "We played a great game and just came up a little short." "We're looking forward to our next game on Saturday."
In the first half, the YellowJackets showed a strong defensive effort and limited to the Comets to seven shots with only three of them reaching the frame of the goal. The YellowJackets were able to put up two shots in the first half, but both were blocked by the Comet defense as neither team would pose a real threat to the goalies.
The second half looked very much like the first with theYellowJackets and Comets going back and forth entering the final third. In the last few minutes of the game, the YellowJackets would create what would be their best opportunity of the gamee, but Comet keeper Monica Dallacasa would stop the shot by
Keely Hayden. With only 21 seconds remaining on the clock, UT Dallas would get a counter attack that would lead to the only goal of the game when a cross from the left end line would be finished off.
Senior goalie
Carrye Funk recorded five saves in the game while Hayden and
Jennifer Martin both had two shots apiece. UTD wound up with a 20-7 advantage in shots in the game while both teams recorded two corner kicks.
LeTourneau will play their final ASC regular season game at 1 PM on Saturday, October 28 in Brownwood, Texas at Howard Payne University. The game holds ASC postseason tournament implications as both YellowJackets squads are vying for playoff spots. Currently, LETU holds the eighth and final playoff spot and needs only a draw against HPU to clinch a playoff berth. A win by LeTourneau coupled with a loss by Concordia University Texas on Saturday would allow the YellowJackets to clinch the No. 7 seed in next week's ASC Tournament, which will be played in Abilene, Texas at Hardin-Simmons University.
