LONGVIEW, Texas - Taking advantage of a total of eight McMurry University errors, the LeTourneau University baseball team would come away with a pair of 10-6 and 9-6 home victories over the visiting War Hawks in American Southwest Conference action at Conrad-Vernon Field on Friday, March 9th.
The pair of wins moves LETU to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the ASC while the War Hawks fall to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in conference action.Â
Game 1
LETU would use a two-run second inning to take an early lead before adding on a single-run in the third, two in the fourth, and then tack on a game-high four runs in the bottom of the fifth while holding McMurry to just four hits total in game one. The two runs in the bottom of the second would come following a
Noah Mahoney leadoff walk and
Carson Dickey single followed by
Gonzalo Sosa who would push across the first run of the game with an RBI double to left-center field.
Jacob Jones would then make the score 2-0 in favor of LeTourneau after collecting an infield single to drive home Dickey and give LETU some breathing room.Â
MCM would make the YellowJackets pay for hanging a pitch over the heart of the plate with the War Hawks hitting a two-run home run to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third, but see Dickey put LETU back up by a score of 3-2 following a single, walk, and sacrifice bunt. The War Hawks would again respond by tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, utilizing a leadoff walk and passed ball before an error allowed for the game-tying run to come home.Â
LeTourneau would then take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits and taking advantage of one McMurry error, before breaking the game open with four runs on a single hit in the bottom of the fifth. MCM attempted one last comeback, pushing across two runs in the top of the sixth and adding an unearned run in the top of the seventh thanks in part to three LETU errors but see their efforts fall short with the game-tying run at the plate.Â
Only seven hits total would be had for LeTourneau, with junior
Lee Hosie collecting two hits and scoring once while Jones and
Will Bradshaw each had two RBI's.Â
On the mound for LETU would be
Nate Hoelker earning the win after throwing 3.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and striking out three.
Ryder Lognion started the game for LETU, and went 3.1 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) and walking five batters in total.Â
Game 2
LETU wouldn't wait nearly as long to break the game open in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first before adding one in the third and seventh innings to go along with a five-run fourth inning. McMurry would take their only lead of the game in the top of the first on a one-out double and RBI single which put the War Hawks up by a score of 1-0 after one. LeTourneau responded with three runs on two hits and one McMurry error to take a 3-1 lead, which is where the score would stay until the bottom of the third when LETU added one run on two hits with a Hosie walk managing to allow the YellowJackets to score following a single to the pitcher.Â
MCM pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4, but quickly saw LeTourneau manage to score five runs on one hit and one error, instead taking advantage of three straight walks to go along with a hit batter earlier in the inning. The War Hawks wind up adding a single run in the top of the seventh and ninth innings to pull within four after putting two runners on base, but it would not be enough as LETU would hang on for the victory.Â
Designated hitter
Gonzalo Sosa and catcher
Noah Mahoney would lead the way, with each player finishing with two hits which included Sosa hitting the only extra-base hit of the game for LETU. Bradshaw would also manage to finish two-for-three at the dish, with the YellowJackets managing to only strand three runners on the evening.Â
Sophomore
Luke Ludwig kept his perfect record in tact, earning the pitching victory (4-0) after throwing six and two-thirds innings while allowing six runs (four earned) on 12 hits. Also making an appearance on Friday evening would be
Kolton Eberlan, who earned his fourth save of the year after throwing 2.1 scoreless innings on three hits.Â
A chance for their first season-sweep of the season will be possible with a single-game against the War Hawks starting at 1 p.m. from Conrad-Vernon Field in Longview.Â
