Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker In Two Overtimes At UMHB

BELTON, Texas - Coming within 90 seconds of earning a draw, the LeTourneau University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1, two overtime heartbreaking loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas on Saturday, September 15th

Falling for the first time this season, LETU is now 5-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the American Southwest Conference while the Cru improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-0 in ASC play.

How It Happened:
  • UMHB would push their offensive attack early on in the game as the Cru would see a shot in the seventh minute go off the post before forcing two saves from LeTourneau keeper Mackenzie Wilbanks just minutes later.
  • Earning a trio of corner kicks mid-way through the first half, the pressure eventually caught up to the YellowJacket defense as a goal in the 31st minute for UMHB gave the Cru a 1-0 lead.
  • The deficit wouldn't faze LeTourneau, as LETU got an opportunity eight minutes later as freshman Kara Gipson fired off a shot past the Cru goalie to tie the game at 1-1 with heavy rain starting to play a factor in the game.
  • With things tied at halftime, the weather system that played a role in the first half finished moving its way through as the Cru would again try to find a goal early in the period to re-claim the lead.
  • LETU managed to withstand the offensive attack from UMHB as the Cru fired off 17 shots in the second half, but could not take the lead as the game would go to overtime.
  • Only two shots would be taken in the first overtime period as Wilbanks would make a pair of saves to keep the game tied after 100 minutes of play, with both teams still looking for a game-winning goal in the second OT session.
  • Earning four corner kicks in the second extra frame, UMHB made the most of their final corner kick of the game as the YellowJackets would be unable to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box which left open an opportunity for Madison Link to put a shot into the right corner of the goal to give UMHB the win.
Key Stats:
  • UMHB kept the pressure on the YellowJackets throughout the game, firing off 29 shots in the game compared to just three for LETU.
  • Corner kicks would be another area that the Cru were able to make the most of, earning 11 corners with one of their two goals coming off the set pieces.
  • Wilbanks made a career-high 18 saves in the match, coming up with multiple saves in key moments to keep the game tied in the second half and first overtime session.
What's Next?
A chance to return home to the Joyce Family Athletic Village to face off against McMurry University is next in store for LETU on Thursday, September 20th. The YellowJackets and War Hawks met in Longview during the opening weekend of the season, with LeTourneau earning a 4-0 victory.
