YellowJacket Women Improve To 4-0-1 With 2-0 Win

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Less than 24 hours removed from playing to a 110 minute, two overtime tie at Rhodes College, the LeTourneau University women's soccer team would score one goal in each half and earn a 2-0 shutout win over Mississippi University For Women at the Columbus Soccer Complex in Columbus, Mississippi on Saturday, September 8th.

The win gives LETU a 4-0-1 start to the season to match last season's school-record start while the Owls fell to 0-4 on the season.

"We scored two great goals in the run of play and overall put in a great effort under very difficult circumstances considering we played 110 minutes the day before" said head coach John Antonisse in a post-match interview. "The bottom line is that we're super happy to get the win and go unbeaten on the weekend."

How It Happened:
  • In the first ever meeting between the Owls and YellowJackets, LeTourneau would strike in the 25th minute as Keely Hayden would net her second goal of the year with an assist from freshman Reagan Sandford.
  • LeTourneau would manage to let off a total of 13 shots and outshoot MUW 13-1 in the first half, but could not find a second goal in the opening 45 minutes and would have to settle for the 1-0 lead at halftime.
  • It would be Sandford's turn to find the back of the net at the 52:24 mark in the second half as LETU would double their lead to 2-0 before relying on their defense to ride out a two-goal victory.
Key Stats:
  • Holding possession for much of the game, LETU would outshoot Mississippi Women by a 21-6 margin which included a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Sandford's goal continued her career-opening streak of scoring in what is now the first five-games of her career at LETU, while her assist on the goal by Hayden is tied for the team lead with two.
  • Junior goalie Mari Zeitlow played all 90 minutes between the pipes, earning her third consecutive shutout for the YellowJackets while making four saves in the game (three saves in the second half).
What's Next?
LeTourneau will now turn their focus to American Southwest Conference action which begins on Thursday, September 13th in Round Rock, Texas against Concordia University Texas. The YellowJackets have won the previous two matches against the Tornadoes, with the past three matches all finishing with a score of 1-0. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
