LeTourneau Bites Tigers in Final Minute

YellowJackets headed to ASC Quarterfinals Tuesday

MARSHALL, Texas -- Reagan Sandford scored with 24 seconds remaining as LeTourneau University women's soccer team beat East Texas Baptist Friday, 2-1, in a thriller.

The win in the regular season finale sends LETU (9-7-1, 5-5-1 American Southwest Conference) into the ASC Championship as the No. 5 seed. LeTourneau will play at No. 4 seed McMurry in the quarterfinals 7 p.m. Tuesday in Abilene.

Sandford scored both of the YellowJackets' goals, the second her team-leading fourth gamewinning goal of the season. Celeste Nunez picked up the assist on the gamewinner. Sandford tucked it into the low left side of the goal, setting off a Jackets' celebration. It was her 10th goal this year.

LeTourneau, which outshot East Texas Baptist, 16-4, grabbed the lead in the 30th minute on Sandford's first goal. ETBU (7-10-1, 4-7-0) tied the game at 1-1 in the second half on a goal by Ashleigh Rondon.

In the 87th minute, the Tigers had a chance to take the lead, but YellowJackets goalkeeper Mackenzie Wilbanks stopped a shot by Jenna Kucera. A minute later, Sandford sent one of her four shots on goal to the right side, but ETBU keeper Maddie Rea made the save. Sandford had another crack with 56 seconds left in regulation, but the shot was off target to the right.

Following an LETU corner kick, Sandford banged home the gamewinner. Nunez had subbed into the game seven minutes earlier. It was her first assist and point of the season.

The YellowJackets finished with seven shots on goal, while the Tigers had two. LeTourneau had nine shots in the first half, while allowing ETBU to attempt just one.

Wilbanks made one save in the victory. ETBU starter Karrigan Falber made two saves before exiting at halftime. Rea finished with three in the second half.

The YellowJackets will be headed to their seventh league postseason tournament and fifth in a row under head coach John Antonisse
