LETU Baseball Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short In 11-10 Loss

JACSKON, Miss. - Trailing 11-7 heading to the bottom of the ninth, the LeTourneau University baseball team would make a late rally that would come up just short in an 11-10 neutral-site loss to Rhodes College at Smth Wills Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi on Sunday, February 10th.

Following opening weekend of play, LETU is now 0-3 overall while the Lynx improved to 1-2 overall after falling in a pair of extra-innings contests on Saturday.

How It Happened:
  • A strong start on the defensive end would allow the YellowJackets to bring out the bats and score three runs in the bottom of the first and open a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
  • The three runs would come on a Will Bradshaw RBI double and Noah Mahoney RBI groundout as well as a Cody Lee solo home-run with two outs in the inning.
  • Rhodes would manage to get one run back in the top of the second after using a one-out single and two out walk to put two runners on before an RBI single would get the Lynx on the board.
  • LETU would threaten again in the bottom of the second by seeing their first two runners get aboard and use a Bradshaw two-out walk to load the bases but would be unable to convert and see the inning end without plating any runs.
  • A one-two-three top of the third allowed LeTourneau to get the bats going once again as the YellowJackets would make sure not endure the same fate as the inning before by scoring three runs on one hit while taking advantage of two Lynx errors.
  • Junior Bryce Brueggemeyer would be the lone YellowJacket hit with an RBI triple to score Jacob Jones who would draw a one out walk as the other two runs would score with two outs.
  • the YellowJackets would then work around a two-out single by Rhodes in the fourth, but would be unable to get anything going in their end of the fourth as LeTourneau would hold a 6-1 lead after four innings of play.
  • A five-run top of the fifth for the Lynx would allow Rhodes to get back in the game as six of the first seven batters of the inning would successfully reach base which would force an LETU pitching change mid-way through the inning.
  • Despite allowing Rhodes to tie the game at 6-6, LeTourneau would manage to get out of the jam and force the Lynx to leave the bases loaded to avoid facing their first deficit of the afternoon.
  • It would be the YellowJackets who would go down in order in the bottom of the fifth which allowed Rhodes to continue the momentum shift and score another two runs on one hit by taking advantage of two errors to start the top of the sixth and put LeTourneau in an 8-6 hole.
  • LETU would get one of the two runs back in the bottom of the sixth by using an Eli Birriel hit-by-pitch to put a leadoff runner on that would eventually score on a Mahoney RBI single.
  • Both teams would threaten by putting runners on base in the seventh but come up empty handed before going quietly in the eighth to keep the score at an 8-7 LeTourneau deficit going to the ninth.
  • Rhodes College would add three insurance runs in the top of the ninth by taking advantage of four hits and a YellowJacket error with the majority of the damage coming on a two-run home run with one-out.
  • Needing four runs to send things to extra-innings and five to win, LETU would waste no-time putting themselves in a position to do so by collecting four-consecutive hits to lead off the inning with Lee hitting his second home-run of the day to pull LeTourneau within two at 11-9.
  • With two runners on and no outs, LETU would sacrifice the game-tying run into scoring position with two outs to work with but see the rally take a hit with a strikeout.
  • With the lineup flipped over and down to their final out, the YellowJackets would get a Lee Hosie walk to load the bases and put the game-winning run on first to bring up Brandon Ramirez
  • Ramirez would hit into a fielder's choice that would see the Lynx try to go second but see Hosie beat out the throw, but see pinch-runner Mark Sanders get thrown out at home to end the game on what would have been the game-tying run.
Key Stats:
  • A sloppy game all-around saw both squads commit four errors in the contest and combining to strand 16 runners on base (eight each).
  • Using a trio of pitchers, Kolton Eberlan would end getting tagged with the loss after throwing 3.2 innings in relief of starter Kolbey Sharpe who would go four and one-third innings and strike out two.
  • Lee's two homers netted a team-high three RBI while Brueggemeyer would collect four hits in five at-bats and drive in one. Five of LETU's 11 hits in the contest would go for extra-bases.
