ABILENE, Texas – A night after getting held to just five hits over nine innings of action, the LeTourneau University baseball team would explode for 14 runs on 16 hits in game one before using a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 10-9 victory and earn a series victory over Hardin-Simmons University at Hunter Field in Abilene, Texas on Sunday, February 24th.
Earning their fifth win in the past six games, LETU is now 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the American Southwest Conference while the Cowboys slipped to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in ASC play.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- HSU would pick up where they left off on Saturday night, using a two-out rally in the top of the first to score the first run of the game with an RBI triple to the left center field gap.
- The YellowJackets would look to respond in the bottom of the first by putting a runner in scoring position with one out but would be unable to move the runner past second as Hardin-Simmons would get a strikeout and ground out to end the inning.
- Following a one-two-three top of the second, LETU would string together four hits including three consecutive hits with one out to grab a 3-1 lead after two innings of action while matching their scoring output from the previous night.
- LeTourneau starter Andrew Harlan would then work his second straight one-two-three inning to keep momentum in favor of the YellowJackets who would break the game open with an eight-run seven-hit bottom of the third.
- The eight-run inning would five of the first six batters of the inning safely reach base as Lee Hosie would deliver the big hit to break things open with a bases-loaded two RBI double.
- Offense would then find its way to Hardin-Simmons in the top of the fourth as the Cowboys would manage to score five runs of their own on six hits but strand two runners as LETU would hold an 11-6 lead halfway through the game.
- HSU would further cut into the YellowJacket lead in the fifth by scoring two runs on three hits and one LeTourneau error, with both runs and all three hits coming with one out.
- Despite the Cowboys cutting the lead to three, LETU would once again force Hardin-Simmons to strand two runners and manage to keep HSU from getting any closer.
- Looking to add to their lead, the YellowJackets would see junior Bryce Breuggemeyer launch his second home run of the game to put LeTourneau up 12-8 as the solo shot would spark a three-run rally with two outs to make the score 14-8 heading to the sixth.
- Things would finally settle down in the latter stages of the game as HSU would manage to score just one more run in the top of the seventh as LETU would even the series at one game apiece.
Key Stats (Game 1):
- Nine of LeTourneau's 16 hits would end up going for extra-bases as the YellowJackets would strand just six runners in the ballgame.
- The top four batters in the LETU lineup would combine to collect nine of the 16 hits and drive in eight runs led by Brueggemeyer and Hosie who both went two-for-three with three RBI's.
- Limiting strikeouts also proved to be pivotal for LeTourneau as the YellowJackets struck out just four times while drawing two walks.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- The second game of Sunday's twin bill would take on a similar role to Saturday's game in the early going as Hardin-Simmons would score two runs in the top of the second and add two runs on two hits in the top of the third while holding LeTourneau scoreless through the first four innings of action.
- After an HSU sacrifice fly would make the score 5-0 in favor of the Cowboys heading to the bottom of the fifth, LETU would finally manage to get on the scoreboard with a Brandon Ramirez RBI double to score Josh Raies and make the score 5-1.
- Hardin-Simmons would take their largest lead of the weekend by scoring two runs on a Michael Hicks two RBI double with two outs in the top of the sixth but see the YellowJackets once again match their efforts with two runs on two hits in the bottom half of the frame to keep the deficit at four going into the seventh inning.
- LeTourneau would then hold HSU scoreless in the top of the seventh after seeing the Cowboys load the baes with two outs but fail to add to their lead as the moment would serve as a turning point in the game.
- A pitching change to start the bottom of the seventh would prove to be just what LETU needed as a Jacob Jones three-run home run with one out in the inning would cut the YellowJacket deficit to 7-6 and give LeTourneau new life with two innings left to play.
- Single runs by the HSU would give Hardin-Simmons breathing room to push the score to 9-6 in favor of the Cowboys, but squandered opportunities would once again take place as LeTourneau would get out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the eighth and strand two more HSU runners in the ninth.
- Down to their final three outs, LeTourneau would see lead-off batter Ramirez get on followed by a one-out single from Jones to bring up the tying-run to the plate with and two outs to work with.
- Noah Mahoney would make the most of the opportunity by hitting a game-tying three-run home to knot things at 9-9 before seeing a foul-out and walk load the bases with two outs.
- Having scored the first run of the game for LeTourneau earlier in the game, Raies would play the role of hero by connecting on a pitch for a walk-off RBI double to the left center field fence as the YellowJackets would stun the Cowboys and grab the series victory.
Key Stats (Game 2):
- Stranded runners would prove to be the difference in the game as the Cowboys would be unable to take advantage of runners in scoring position by stranding 18 runners in the game while seeing LeTourneau strand nine runners of their own.
- The hot-hitting of LETU would carry over into game two as the YellowJackets outhit HSU 13-10 in the contest and collected eight more hits for extra-bases with Raies and Mahoney both collecting two extra-base hits in the game.
- Deploying a similar game plan as Wednesday night's win at Centenary, LeTourneau would use five pitchers in the contest with Konner Gayle picking up his first victory of the year after tossing the final three innings of action and allowing just two runs on three hits.
