TYLER, Texas- Facing the reigning National Champions for the first time this season, the LeTourneau University baseball team was unable to find their offensive production in an 8-0 and 3-1 road loss at Irwin Field in Tyler, Texas on Friday, March 22nd.
The losses drop the YellowJackets 13-9 on the season while the Patriots improve to 13-10 overall.
Game One:
No runs would come across in the game until the bottom of the fourth as the Patriots used five hits to score five runs to take a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the fifth. A pair of three up, three down innings for the YellowJacket offense would follow, and gave UTT a chance to increase their lead. Texas-Tyler would take advantage of the opportunity by tacking on two more runs off a 2-RBI single up the middle to take an 8-0 lead going to the seventh. LeTourneau's last chance to try and break through would wind up going like the innings before as the Patriots grabbed the an eight-run victory in game one.
Andrew Harlan would fall to 2-3 overall on the mound for the YellowJackets, tossing 5.1 innings before
Luke Ludwig took things over in the sixth. LETU was held to just one hit by Patriot senior Nate Imig, coming from
Jacob Faubion in the third inning.
Game Two:
The YellowJackets saw an equally slow start in game two as they recorded just two hits through three innings. Despite offensive woes, they would be the first team to get on the board as
Eli Birriel singled to right field to bring
Noah Mahoney across to put the YellowJackets on top 1-0.
The Patriots would respond with a leadoff homerun in the bottom half of the frame to tie things up at one all and manage to take the lead on an RBI single later in the inning to go up 2-1 heading to the fifth.
The LETU offense would be unable to keep things going in the following innings as the Patriots would add to their lead with an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the seventh to go up 3-1. Birriel collected his third hit of the game to allow the game-tying run to come to the plate in the top of the ninth and would be followed by a
Lee Hosie walk before seeing the game end on a double-play.
10 stranded runners would prove to be a big issue for the YellowJackets as LETU would strike out 16 times in the contest. Three of LeTourneau's five hits in the contest would come from Birriel while
Brandon Ramirez and
Jacob Jones each added one.
