Men's Tennis Pushes Patriots To Brink In 5-4 Loss

LONGVIEW, Texas – Trailing 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play, the LeTourneau University men's tennis team would two of three singles matches that would go to a third-set tiebreak but ultimately fall by a final score of 5-4 to Dallas Baptist University at the Davis Tennis Courts in Longview, Texas on Wednesday, March 6th.

LETU saw their three-match win streak snapped to fall to 4-3 overall while the Patriots improved to 5-6 overall after splitting a pair of matches on Wednesday.

The YellowJackets would not back down against NCAA Division II DBU, keeping things close in all three doubles matches that were played. Bobby Clark and Nathan Schmidt would see a close battle at number three doubles end up going in favor of the Patriots by a score of 8-5 while Zac Crowley-Kurth and James Estrada would fall by a score of 8-4. The number one doubles match proved to be the closest of the three as Jimmie Henson and Christian Farris would manage to battle back and force a tiebreaker at 7-7 before winning the tiebreak 7-2 to take the match 8-7 and grab momentum right before singles play.

Henson would carry over the strong finish into his number one singles match, making quick work of his opponent with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to tie the match at 2-2. Farris would be unable to pull out a victory at number two singles, falling 6-4, 6-4 while Schmidt nearly overcame a first set loss in a 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 defeat at number three singles. DBU would also manage to take the number four singles match over Crowley-Kurth by scores of 6-3, 6-3 before Clark would earn a 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 win at number five singles. Jeffrey Golladay would make an appearance in the final match of the day at number six singles, battling back from a 6-2 first set defeat to win 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 as the YellowJackets would come up just one-point shy of a team win.

LeTourneau will look to maintain their plus .500 record in their next match when they take on the University of Mount Union in their opening match at the 2019 Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The match, which will take place at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 11th, will take place at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center and will be the first of three matches for LETU at Spring Tennis Fest.
