CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas- With their final regular-season series on the line, the LeTourneau University softball team took an early lead in game three against the University of the Ozarks before falling on a walk-off hit to result in a 2-1 loss on Saturday, April 20th.
The YellowJackets finish the regular-season with a 23-15 overall record and an 18-12 standing in the American Southwest Conference. The Eagles have one more series remaining next weekend and improve to 10-27 overall and 7-20 in the ASC.
A quiet start offensively would be seen from both squads to begin the day as neither team was able to build momentum at the plate through four scoreless innings of play.
LETU's
Ashley Crawford began the top of the fifth reaching base on a walk for the YellowJackets as
Emilee Anderson followed with an infield single before a
Taylor Nichols sacrifice fly would bring in pinch-runner
Silver Montgomery for the first run of the game.
Ozarks was able to put their leadoff batter aboard in the bottom half of the sixth and cashed in a run following an RBI double to tie things up at one but would strand the go-ahead run at second.
The YellowJackets went down in order in the top half of the seventh and would be faced with the task of keeping UO off the board. to try and send the game into extra-innings with a series victory on the line. The Eagles had other plans as they put the game-winning run on first with a one-out walk and would use a sacrifice bunt to put the run into scoring position. A two-out walk-off RBI single would end the game and allow Ozarks to steal the series from LETU 2-1.
Despite a solid performance in the circle, freshman
Bailey Richey would take the loss for the YellowJackets after allowing two runs on just six hits in a complete-game performance with eight strikeouts. Anderson led LETU with two hits on the day while
Hana Bonner and
Taylor Nichols also added one hit each with the YellowJackets being limited to four hits in the game.
