KERRVILLE, Texas -- LeTourneau University women's soccer team lost its season opener to host Schreiner, 1-0, in overtime Friday.
The YellowJackets put five shots on goal to the Mountaineers' three, but were victimized by Schreiner's gamewinner 2:36 into the extra period. Payton Swieczkowski scored on the lone shot of overtime to decide it. Kayla Mullen had the assist.
Schreiner attempted seven shots, while LeTourneau's five on frame accounted for the Jackets' total. LETU had four shots in the first half, but managed just one in the second. Schreiner had three in each of the first two halves.
Kiersten Reeser stopped two shots in goal for the YellowJackets. Natalia Fuentes made five saves for the Mountaineers.
LeTourneau had three opportunities for set pieces in the closing minutes of the first half, but were unable to convert on the three of its five corner kicks. Schreiner did not attempt a corner kick in the match.
LETU's
Celeste Nunez took a crack at it in the 66th minute, but her shot in the lower left corner of the net was saved by Saucedo to keep the game scoreless. Reeser stopped a shot by Dani Loeblein 13 minutes earlier to keep the Mountaineers off the board. Nunez attempted two shots.
LeTourneau will play at the University of Dallas in Irving next Friday at 5 p.m.
