AUSTIN, Texas – LeTourneau's baseball team went 1-1 in the first two games of the Concordia Texas Baseball Classic Saturday.
LeTourneau lost to No. 3 Trinity, 12-7, in the first game. The YellowJackets beat La Verne, 8-5, in the second game. LETU had a combined 23 hits Saturday.
In the first game, LETU (3-2) took a 5-2 lead after two innings.
Noah Mahoney had a sacrifice fly, and the Jackets scored on a pair of errors.
Weston McKinley doubled down the right field line to drive in a run that spotted the YellowJackets a three-run lead.
Trinity answered with seven runs in the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. The Tigers added a run in the fifth, sixth and eighth to put it away, despite LeTourneau's two runs in the sixth and seventh.
Bryce Brueggemeyer drove in a run in the sixth on a groundout, and
Kameron Lindsey had an RBI single in the seventh.
The Jackets left 11 runners on base after outhitting the Tigers, 11-10.
Austin Smith went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Will Bradshaw collected two hits and a stolen base. McKinley was 4-for-5 with a stolen base.
Jared Schurig went 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs, six hits and a walk in the loss.
In the win over La Verne, LeTourneau scored five runs in the second to take a 7-3 lead.
Jaggar Vaughn hit the first pitch he saw to right to drive in Lindsey to start the explosion in the second. Bradshaw ripped a two-run triple on a 1-1 count to center to make it 6-3.
Colton Oney drove in a run to pad the lead to four.
LeTourneau added an insurance run in the third to take an 8-3 lead. La Verne scored once in the fourth and again in the seventh, but
Jedidiah Crone came on in relief in the seventh with the bases loaded, and allowed only a single to the first batter he faced before closing the door. Crone struck out two batters in the ninth to seal the save.
Kyle Maysonave worked an inning and two-thirds in relief, allowing two hits and a run to pick up the win. The Jackets saddled Deveon Burhans with the loss after tagging him with six hits and seven runs in two innings.
Bradshaw went 2-for-5 with two RBI. McKinley collected three hits and an RBI in four plate appearances. Lindsey went 3-for-4. The YellowJackets and Leopards each had 12 hits.
LETU meets Trinity 2 p.m. Sunday in the finale.
