Miles Grubbs neeeded a third-set gutcheck to help LeTourneau University men's tennis team get by Austin College, 5-4, Saturday.
The YellowJackets (4-1) won two of the three doubles matches, taking a 2-1 lead into singles. In the final match of the day, Grubbs clinched the win following a long, exhaustive couple weeks for the freshman.
Jimmie Henson and
Christian Farris lost to Brett O'Brien, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
Nathan Schmidt and Rodrigo Vazquez-Chairez defeated Calum Robe and Tate Nelson, 8-6, at the No. 2 position. At No. 3,
Julian Lee and Grubbs beat Travis Fortune and Andres Padilla, 8-3.
Henson fell to O'Brian, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Farris lost to Padilla, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 2. Lee defeated Robe, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot. Schmidt dropped his No. 4 singles match to Preston Spivey, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). To tie the match at 4-4, No. 5 Vazquez-Chairez defeated Fortune, 6-4, 6-3. Securing the 5-4 win for the YellowJackets, No. 6 Grubbs bested Nelson, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
LETU will play at Sul Ross State 1 p.m. Friday. The YellowJackets play at Southwestern 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
