LONGVIEW – LeTourneau's baseball team swept a doubleheader from Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday to win all three games in the weekend series.
The YellowJackets beat the Crusaders, 6-5, in the first game and 8-0 in the second game. LETU improved to 9-7 overall, 6-3 in the American Southwest Conference. UHMB fell to 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the league.
In the first game, LETU took a 3-1 lead in the first inning following an RBI double to left-center by
Weston McKinley and
Matt Lowery's run-scoring single up the middle. The Cru answered back with runs in the second and fourth to tie it. Taylor Neil's RBI single through the left side knotted the game at 3-3.
In the bottom half of the fifth,
Bryce Brueggemeyer singled to right to score a run, and McKinley drove in two more to give LeTourneau a 6-3 cushion. Caimyn Holliday doubled home two runs in the sixth as the Cru cut the gap to 6-5. But Jackets closer
Will Bradshaw retired the final four batters to preserve the win.
Kyle Maysonave (2-0) went three innings, allowing four hits and an unearned run to pick up the win in relief. Bradshaw picked up the save, allowing two runs and two hits over the final two innings.
McKinley was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Noah Mahoney went 2-for-3 with a double. Lowery was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Brueggemeyer was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Bradshaw and
Cody Lee both went 1-for-3.
In the second game,
Kolbey Sharpe (3-2) needed only 89 pitches to go the distance and pick up the victory on the hill. He struck out seven, and allowed four hits and no walks in the complete game effort. It was the longest outing of his career.
Chaz Jackson went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Bradshaw, Mahoney, McKinley and Lee each had two hits.
Jackson's infield single in the third scored Lee for the Jackets' first run. Bradshaw tripled home two in the fourth to make it 3-0. Jackson doubled in two more in the sixth, extending the lead to 5-0. Mahoney belted his fourth home run of the season in the seventh to start a three-run inning.
Lane Williams doubled to right-center to score McKinley, and Lee's sacrifice fly plated Maysonave, who walked in a pinch hitter's role.
The YellowJackets pounded 14 hits in the second game. The Cru had only four base runners in the nightcap.
LeTourneau remains at home for a non-conference series versus McMurry beginning 7 p.m. Friday.
