Sandford's goal not enough in loss at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – Anna Crane's goal in the 59th minute foiled a comeback by the LeTourneau women's soccer team at Belhaven Bowl Stadium Thursday.

The Yellowjackets fall to 1-9-1 on the campaign, including winless in five American Southwest Conference fixtures. Belhaven improved to 6-3-1, 2-2-1, with the 3-1 victory.

"We played better today," head coach Alyssa Taramona said. "We will continue to work on fundamentals, be more consistent with the quality of play and look to capitalize on our opportunities in the attacking third."

Reagan Sandford notched the equalizer on a beautiful set piece just outside the penalty area. In the 56th minute, struck a beautiful ball off her right boot and beat the Blazers' goalkeeper inside the back post.

"Reagan (Sandford) played a beautiful shot from about 20-yards out, finding the back of the net with an unstoppable shot" Taramona said. "Her precision and hunger to score is a rare combination."

Belhaven earned a penalty kick in the 52nd minute after the Yellowjackets committed a foul in the penalty area.  Emily Easterling stepped up to the dot and buried the attempt inside the post and keeper, supplying her side with a 1-0 advantage.

Abby Goff provided insurance for the Blazers when she netted the final tally.

LeTourneau returns to the Joyce Family Athletic Village Sunday at 5 p.m. The Yellowjackets host Centenary in a nonconference match.
