LETU Blanks Jarvis in Taramona's First Victory

LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University women's soccer team won its first game of the year Tuesday, giving new head coach Alyssa Taramona her first victory as a YellowJacket. LETU blanked Jarvis Christian, 2-0.

Reagan Sandford scored two second half goals, both on assists from Kara Gipson as the Jackets (1-3-1) returned to the pitch for the first time since Feb. 7. LETU goalkeeper Kiersten Reeser made two saves in the shutout.

It was the shorthanded Jackets' first shutout victory of the season.

LeTourneau outshot Jarvis Christian, 20-11.

Sandford scored the game's first goal in the 59th minute when she beat a defender, and banged the shot off Bulldogs keeper Hailey Rivera. She added another in the 73rd minute when Gipson sent a long ball beyond Jarvis' defense, Sandford chased it down, and then casually booted it into the upper right corner of the short side.

It was Sandford's second and third goals of the season.

Reeser made a save in each half for the clean sheet. It was the fifth shutout of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth place on the school's all-time list. Rivera made 10 saves for the Bulldogs, who fell to 0-2-0.

LeTourneau will play at rival East Texas Baptist 5 p.m. Saturday.
