Softball Splits with Cru in ASC Opener

Rubber game set for 12 p.m. Saturday to decide series

LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University's softball team split a doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday, falling 10-4 in the first game, before bouncing back to win the nightcap, 7-6, on the opening weekend of American Southwest Conference play.

The Jackets (2-2, 1-1 ASC) and Crusaders (4-5, 1-1) will decide the series 12 p.m. Saturday at LETU Softball Field.

Bailey Richey came on in relief in the second game, working the final inning and two thirds, setting the Cru's final five batters down in order to pick up her second win of the season. Freshman Mickenzie Murry's single to center in the sixth inning scored Hunter Handley for the gamewinning run.

Murry went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base.

UMHB took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but LETU scored four runs on three hits and three errors in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead, 4-3. Murry singled to right to drive in the tying run. After Kylie Banks singled, Murry scored on an error to put the Jackets up a run.

The Cru scored two more in the third to regain the lead. Two innings later, Katelyn Trombley tripled down the right field line to drive in a run, knotting the game at 5-5. Callie Poore's sacrifice fly one batter later put the Jackets ahead, 6-5. Bailey Eggleston singled home a run as UMHB tied it up again in the sixth. But Isabella Tresca's two-out single to center started the late rally. Handley, who came on to run for Tresca, stole second, and advanced to third when the ball skipped by the shortstop. That set the stage for Murry's gamewinning RBI.

Richey, who suffered the loss in the first game, didn't allow a baserunner in relief to close the door. She needed just 23 pitches to retire the Cru quietly over the final two innings.

Tresca went 2-for-3, Ashley Crawford was 1-for-3, and Banks was 1-for-2.

LeTourneau opened a 4-1 lead in the third inning of Game 1 after Trombley homered to center. But Mary Hardin-Baylor scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings, and tacked on five in the seventh to put the game away.

The Cru pounded 16 hits in the opener. The Jackets had six.

Trombley and Poore both went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the first game. Trombley also had a stolen base. Tannery, who worked the first five innings of the second game, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks, had a hit, two stolen bases and two walks from the plate in the opener. Haley Claterbaugh was 1-for-3 in Game 1.
