JACKSON, Miss. – LeTourneau University men's tennis team beat Belhaven, 8-1, Sunday to polish off a road-heavy weekend.
It marked the second road trip in three days after having to hit the road Friday for an easy victory at Louisiana College, before returning home later that day, only to turn around and battle Southwestern University in a nonconference match, and, oh yeah, hit the road again that same day to get ready for the Blazers on Sunday.
All told, these YellowJackets (10-3, 3-0 American Southwest Conference) logged a ton of miles, tucked away a pair of league victories. It sets the stage for an April 22nd 3 p.m. tilt at East Texas Baptist before wrapping up league play at home against the University of Texas at Dallas two days later.
Julian Lee,
Rodrigo Vazquez,
Patrick Baney,
Nathan Schmidt and
Miles Grubbs each were double winners on a day LETU dominated pairs play. It was the seventh time this season LeTourneau has swept the doubles.
Lee and Baney beat Joan Soler and Chris Stevens, 8-3, in the first pairs match to finish. Vazquez and Schmidt won by the same score at No. 2 doubles, taking down Bryce Livingston and Matthew Riddew.
Jonah McGinty and Grubbs blitzed Jason Ball and Kelsey Smylie, 8-0, at the third position in the final pairs match to finish.
Vazquez gave the YellowJackets a 4-0 lead when he steamrolled Livingston, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles spot. Baney clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Ball. Schmidt zipped by Stevens, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 in the fourth match to be completed. His win followed Lee's 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, triumph over Soler at the top flight. Grubbs was a 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 winner over Smylie at No. 6.
The Blazers lone win came at the No. 5 position, where Riddew escaped a battle from
Gavin Meyer, winning 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.
Schmidt and Baney each won their ninth matches of the season, and Vazquez claimed his eighth. Lee and Baney improved to 10-1 as a tandem. Vazquez and Schmidt and Grubbs and McGinty each moved to 9-3 together.
