RICHARDSON, Texas – LeTourneau University's baseball team dropped the final game of a weekend series at the University of Texas at Dallas Sunday, 6-4.
The YellowJackets (14-18, 12-12 American Southwest Conference) will finish the regular season at home against rival East Texas Baptist Friday and Saturday. LeTourneau fell to 8-10 on the road, while the Comets improved to 10-5 at home.
UT Dallas (21-10, 17-7) scored three runs in the first inning to jump on top. LETU tied things up in the third on
David Pugh's RBI single to left and
Jaggar Vaughn's two-run single to left center. The Comets answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the lead, 5-3. They added a run in the eighth to give themselves a three-run cushion.
Cody Stanley crushed a solo homer to left on a 2-1 count with one out in the top of the ninth to bring the Jackets within two runs. After UTD closer Ben Soule, who picked up his second save, got the second out of the inning,
Kameron Lindsey singled down the right field line to extend his season-long hitting streak to 10 games. Pugh drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second, but Soule got a fly out to end the game, and the Comets held on.
Pugh went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Vaughn was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Noe Balderas went 1-for-3. Stanley was 1-for-2 with the solo shot. Lindsey and
Chaz Jackson both went 1-for-4.
UT Dallas starter Kenny Garza (4-2) got the win, going five innings, allowing three runs and five hits with no walks. Soule worked the final two innings, allowing two hits, a run and a walk.
Kolbey Sharpe (3-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits and a walk, while striking out four.
LETU's final regular season series against ETBU is set to begin 7 p.m. Friday at Conrad-Vernon Field. Saturday is Senior Day for the YellowJackets.
