Men's Tennis Falls in ASC Quarterfinals

DALLAS – LeTourneau University men's tennis team fell to McMurry, 5-3, in the American Southwest Conference quarterfinals Thursday at Southern Methodist University.

The loss ended the YellowJackets' season at 11-5 overall after finishing second in the ASC East Division. McMurry (7-9) advanced to the semifinals.

LeTourneau dropped the first two doubles matches, falling into a 2-0 hole when Rodrigo Vazquez and Alex Barrero fell first to Reid Smith and Trey Fambrough at the No. 2 flight, 8-3. McMurry's Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniel beat Julian Lee and Patrick Baney, 8-4, at No. 1.

But LETU's Miles Grubbs and Jonah McGinty overcame an early deficit, fighting back to hand Dylan Bryant and Chris Causer an 8-6 verdict at No. 3 pairs. That cut the War Hawks lead to 2-1.

LeTourneau was without its regular lineup the last two weeks of the season, forcing changes to doubles and singles positions.

Baney zipped through a 6-0, 6-2 win over Smith at No. 3 singles to tie the match at 2-2. Martinez handed Lee a 6-4, 6-1 loss at No. 1 singles to put McMurry back ahead, 3-2.

Grubbs came through with his second win of the day, authoring a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Fambrough at No. 6 singles to square the match at 3-3. In a heavily contested battle at No. 5 singles, Barrero fell in a three-setter to Causer, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. That allowed the War Hawks to reclaim the lead.

With two three-set battles remaining on the Mustangs' indoor courts, LeTourneau's Jeffrey Golladay squared his No. 5 match with Connor Hogan. He dropped the first set, 6-4, before roaring back to win the second, 6-2. Golladay and Hogan each won a game in the third set.

Vazquez won his opening set with Daniel, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. But Daniel came back to win the next two sets by the same score to clinch the victory for the War Hawks.

Grubbs and McGinty finished with a team-leading 11 pairs victories this season. Grubbs won both his singles and doubles matches for the fifth time this year. Baney captured his team-leading 10th singles victory.
