LONGVIEW, Texas – Jagger Vaughn's walk-off single completed LETU's 5-4 comeback in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader against McMurry at Conrad-Vernon Field.
The YellowJackets improved to 4-11 overall, including 2-9 in American Southwest Conference play, while the War Hawks fell to 7-8, 4-7.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh and final frame, LETU trimmed the margin to 4-3, when
Ethan Wood scored on a double by
Dane Jones.
Cameron Pfafman, who followed an infield single by Wood, with a four-pitch walk, advanced to third on the two-bagger by Jones.
After McMurry intentionally walked
Anthony Ybarra, Nick Hamel uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Pfafman to scamper home, knotting the contest at 4-4. The War Hawks chose to send
Cody Stanley to first and facing Vaughn with the bags full.
"We really had to change some offensive approaches from last night and that suited us well in the last inning," Head Coach
Robin Harriss said. "Getting a pair of quality at-bats from the first two guys to lead off the seventh, set the table for us. Jones had a clutch hit to drive in a run then Vaughn worked hard to get a ball in the air after we had tied it. He really came up big with the walk-off liner."
Wood scored in the first on a grounder to the right side by
Hunter Miller, answering McMurry's tally from the top of the frame.
Raul Martinez got the start on the mound for the YellowJackets, tossed 6.0 innings, scattered nine hits, walked two and fanned four, allowing four runs – three earned.
"Martinez led the way with 6.0 veteran innings," Harriss said. "The key to his successful outing was limiting their two-out production. He worked both sides of the plate and stayed competitive."
Despite hitting a batter and allowing four hits in the third, he limited the damage and kept his team in the game, surrendering two runs.
Devin Greaff laid down a squeeze to score Stanley from third, slicing the deficit to 3-2, in the fourth. A miscue by the YellowJackets in the sixth aided the guest in pushing the margin out to two.
Jones and Wood accounted for four of LETU's seven hits, totaling two each. Vaughn, McKinley and Greaff tallied a knock a piece.
TJ Spitdowski tossed a scoreless seventh to earn his first win this season.
"Spitdowski did what he was asked, putting up a zero," Harriss said.
