CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – An unexpected hero emerged in the season finale win-or-go-home contest, leading LETU to an 8-7 victory over Ozarks at Lonnie Qualls Field Saturday.
Freshman
Hunter Miller recorded his first-career home run by driving an 0-1 offering from Nicholas Ben over the fence in right center.
Ethan Wood and
Cameron Pfafman crossed the plate in front of the rookie, breaking a 5-5 tie in the top of six.
LETU concluded the regular season at 15-22, including 12-18 in league play, while the Eagles finish at 13-25, 12-18. The YellowJackets earned the series win, grabbing the tiebreaker and securing the eighth seed in next week's American Southwest Conference Tournament.
Holding the slimmest of margin, after allowing two runs in the seventh, LETU called on
Shane Salzman to get the final six outs. After sitting down Ozarks in order in the eighth, Salzman worked out of a two on, two-out jam, with a soft liner to short.
Wood, Pfafman and
Cole Thompson registered three-hit games, as LETU recorded 13, the second-most this spring. Jones,
Weston McKinley and
Devin Greaff tallied one each.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 margin, just two batters into the bottom of the first.
Landon Stocks settled in and kept his team in the game, retiring 12 of the next 17 batters.
Greaff reached on an error to start the third and cut the deficit in half on Wood's double to right center. Jones evened things with an RBI single and two batters later gave the guest their first lead of the contests when he scored on a wild pitch.
Wood collected two-more RBIs in his next at-bat, lacing a single to right center, chasing Greaff and McKinley home and boosting the advantage to 5-3, after four.
Laundry Suarez replaced Stocks after the first two hitters drew free passes, eventually scoring and setting up Miller's game winner.
Suarez worked three innings and picked up the victory, improving to 2-1, while Salzman collected his third save. He's allowed one run in 10.2 innings pitched, lowering his ERA to 0.84 and fanning nine.
