CLEVELAND, Miss. – LETU concluded its season with a 6-3 setback to Sul Ross State in the first round of the American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament, hosted by Belhaven at University Field on the campus of Delta State Thursday.
Making their fifth appearance in the conference tournament and first since 2019, the YellowJackets concluded the campaign at 15-26. The Lobos improved to 23-18 and face Hardin-Simmons at 7 p.m., the final game Thursday.
Freshman
Hailee Leger got the start in the circle for LETU and was the hard luck loser, scattering six hits, no walks and striking out two in six innings. The defense committed four errors behind the Belle Chase, La., native, accounting for five unearned runs.
Alysa Torres walked to load the bases with one out in the first, following back-to-back singles from
Madelyn Tannery and
Kylie Grisham but
Callie Poore's sacrifice fly to center was all the YellowJackets mustered.
Leger induced weak contact in the home half of the frame but after a pair of miscues her side was in a 4-1 hole. After going down in order in the second, LETU committed two more errors and allowing another tally on a sacrifice fly – just the second ball to reach the outfield.
Emily Anderson reached on a fielding error to open the third and came in to score on a triple to the power ally in right center from Tannery. She scampered home on a sac fly by Grisham, trimming the margin to 5-3. Lobos' starter Jodie Vaughn induced a liner off the bat of
Macy Clevenger to close the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
An infield single, a stolen base and two ground outs by Sul Ross State in the home fourth accounted for the final margin.
