Heartbreaking loss ends baseball season

MARSHALL, Texas – LETU's season ended in heartbreaking fashion in the American Southwest Conference Baseball Blue Bracket at Woods Field Saturday.

The YellowJackets (15-24) fell to McMurry (24-17) on a walk-off single in the 12th inning. The game is tied for the fifth longest in tournament history.

Making his final collegiate start, senior Jared Schurig tossed his best game of the season, despite his final line. Less than 24 hours after his start was delayed and his availability for the must-win contest was a game-time decision, the Frisco, Texas, native gutted out 7.1 innings. The Eagles had no answer for Schruig through seven frames, tallying one run on six hits before getting to him in the eighth.

The offense banged out 14 hits, with Cameron Pfafman recording his second four-hit game of the season. Dane Jones was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle with three RBIs, while Ethan Wood and Cody Stanley notched two knocks each. Dylan Cortes, Kyle Maysonave and Andrew Klingenstein added their names to the hit column.

Following three walks in the top of the 12th, Pfafman laced a single to center and pushed the YellowJackets in front 8-6.

McMurry responded with a lead-off single to the left, followed by a blast over the fence in left. The winning run reach on a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk and a pitching change, Reed Hodges delivered the final blow.

Jones gave LETU its second first-inning advantage in the tournament with a one-out triple, plating Wood. In Jones next at-bat, he doubled over the right-fielder's head, chasing Wood home for a 2-0 margin in the third.

The War Hawks cut the deficit in the half in the fifth with a lead-off triple, followed by a ground out.

Maysonave singled to open the sixth but was retired on a bang-bang play, trying to score from first on a double by Klingenstein. Stanley extended the gap to 3-1, with an RBI knock.
In the eighth, McMurry put five runs on three hits in the books, pushing LETU to the brink of elimination.

Stanley led off with a single and advanced to third on back-to-back walks by McKinley and Jagger Vaughn, who came off the bench. Cortes delivered a pinch-hit single, pulling the YellowJackets within one at 6-5. After a strikeout, Jones tallied the equalizer with a bullet to center. LETU left the bases loaded in the ninth.

The YellowJackets stranded 13 runners, including five in scoring position and three more thrown out on the base paths.

LETU's closer Shane Salzman relieved Schruig, walking three, including one intentionally, fanning two and hitting a batter in 1.2 scoreless innings. Aman Patel blanked the War Hawks in the 10th and 11th before being tagged with three runs on two hits in the final frame. The first batter Landry Suarez faced; Hodges singled through the right side.
