Baseball Falls in Home Opener

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Dane Jones had two hits and a homer, but the LeTourneau baseball team fell to Austin College, 8-6, in the YellowJackets' home opener on Wednesday night at Conrad-Vernon Field.

Jones went 2-for-3 with a a home run and three runs scored, while Andrew Klingenstein also had two hits in the loss for LeTourneau (1-3).

Austin College's Mason Woodhouse hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and give the lead to the visiting Roos for good. LeTourneau put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Austin College closer Kurtis Gustafson got Klingenstein to ground out to end the threat and the game.

It was a back-and-forth mid-week contest.

Austin College took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the YellowJackets answered in the home-half on Cameron Pfafman's RBI single to shallow right field that plated Jones to even the score.The Roos built a 4-1 lead with a run in the second and two more in the third before Jones homered in the bottom of the third to get LeTourneau within 4-2. 

The homer was Jones' second of the year.

Trailing 5-2 in the fourth, LeTourneau got a run back in the frame as Cole Thompson tripled home Carter Amarantos. In the fifth, the YellowJackets made it a one-run game as Pfafman scampered home on a wild pitch. 

LeTourneau still trailed 6-4 into the bottom of the seventh. The YellowJackets capitalized on an Austin College error and scored twice as Klingenstein delivered an RBI single and he later scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Woodhouse and the Roos had the final answer. Tripp Thoms walked to begin the eighth and Woodhouse produced his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to left field, to make it 8-6.

LeTourneau totaled 10 hits in the loss as eight starters recorded at least one hit. Kyle Maysonave got the start on the mound and went 1.2 innings. Calvin Lopez (0-1) received the loss out of the bullpen as the YellowJackets used five pitchers on the night.

Brandon Hill had three hits for Austin College. Justin Lambright (1-0) got the win for the Roos, while Gustafson earned the save.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau opens a three-game series on Friday against Dillard at Conrad-Vernon Field (6 p.m.).
