Baseball Notches Midweek Victory at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas -- Andrew Klingenstein and Carter Amarantos combined for five RBIs and the LeTourneau baseball team picked up a midweek road win at Austin College, 8-6, on Tuesday night in Sherman.

The win splits the season series between LeTourneau (7-4) and Austin College (2-2). Both games ended with the same 8-6 score.

LeTourneau scored six runs over the first two innings and used a plethora of relievers to hold down the host Roos and take the road win.

The YellowJackets only had eight hits in the contest, but took advantage of Austin College mistakes to open up a 6-1 lead after two innings.

LeTourneau got on the board with two runs in the top of the first as Cole Thompson led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch -- one of two in the inning -- to make it 1-0. Klingenstein then drove in Kyle Maysonave, who reached on a catcher's interference, with an RBI ground out later in the frame.

LeTourneau then scored four times on just one hit in the second. Austin College made two errors and hit two batters in the inning and the YellowJackets took full advantage. The only hit of the inning was a two-run, two-out single from Klingenstein that capped the inning to give the YellowJackets a 6-1 lead. Earlier in the inning, Amarantos drew a bases loaded walk and Maysonave was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The bullpen did solid work to secure the win for LeTourneau following Shane Salzman's spot start. The YellowJackets used six relievers to cover the final seven innings and the group allowed four runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Salzman went two innings and allowed one earned run and had three strikeouts.

Dylan Cortes (1-0) was the only reliever to throw more than an inning and he notched the win after tossing two scoreless frames and retiring all six hitters he faced (including two strikeouts). Will Podsednik and Will Bond both threw scoreless innings and Cruz Cox collected the save as he held on to the lead in the ninth.

LeTourneau added a run in the fourth on a Dane Jones RBI double before going ahead 8-3 in the sixth as Amarantos doubled home Jones.

Maysonave went 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the YellowJackets, while Klingenstein was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Amarantos 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Tripp Thoms was 2-for-3 for Austin College.

Kurtis Gustafson (0-1) got the loss for the Roos after allowing six runs, one earned, in three innings.
