RAYMOND, Miss. -- A doubles sweep propelled the LeTourneau men's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Belhaven in the spring opener on Saturday on the campus of Hinds Community College.
It was the fourth straight win for LeTourneau (1-0) over former ASC foe Belhaven (0-1).
The YellowJackets picked up wins at all three doubles flights and needed those points to hold off a Belhaven rally in singles play.
Top-flight duo of
Julian Lee and
Miles Grubbs picked up their first win of the spring with an 8-4 defeat of the Blazers' Gaspar Meda and Bryce Livingston.
Andres Urrutia and
John Lewis made it 2-0 YellowJackets with their 8-3 victory over Mark Matviiev and Justin Humphrey at the No. 2 spot before
Kenny Munoz and
Westley Curtiss completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Jason Ball and Hayden Lassiter.
Urrutia handled Lassiter in singles play as the sophomore notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 flight.Â
LeTourneau lost a pair of close matches at No. 1 and No. 3. Lee fell to Meda 6-4, 6-3 at the top flight while Grubbs lost a tiebreak in the first set before falling in the second to Livingston 7-6(6), 6-3 at No. 3.
Lewis picked up the YellowJackets, though, at the No. 5 slot. He rallied back from a set down to force a super tiebreak in the third and completed the comeback win over Humphrey 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
The victory for Lewis was his first career singles win in dual matches.
