Softball Sweeps Illinois Wesleyan

MARSHALL, Texas -- Murphy Williams tossed a complete-game two-hitter in game one and the offense came alive in game two for the LeTourneau softball team in a doubleheader sweep of Illinois Wesleyan on Monday night in Marshall.

LeTourneau (9-6) took the opener 3-1 before completing the sweep with a 7-3 victory in the finale. It was the first all-time meetings between the programs.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 3, Illinois Wesleyan 1

Williams threw a two-hit complete-game and a three-run fifth inning propelled the YellowJackets to a 3-1 victory in the first game.

Williams (4-1) tallied her third complete game of the season as she went the distance and allowed just one run on two hits with five strikeouts. She registered only one walk and allowed a hit in the second inning and then did not surrender another hit until the seventh.

The offense backed Williams' efforts with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Laney Taylor singled to start the inning and pinch-runner Maddie Flanery swiped second base before Williams delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0. A squeeze bunt from Alexa Neilon brought home Graci Hart and Kylie Grisham added a sacrifice fly to cap the inning.

Illinois Wesleyan got a run in the seventh, but Williams closed the door with a strikeout to finish off the complete game.

Taylor, Williams, Callie Poore, and Neilon all had a hit apiece in the win for LeTourneau.

Nina Mardjetko (3-3) got the loss in the circle for Illinois Wesleyan after throwing all seven innings.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 7, Illinois Wesleyan 3

Hailee Leger was strong in the circle and the YellowJackets scored all seven runs over a two-inning stretch to complete the sweep with a 7-3 win.

Grisham, Mickenzie Murry, Kenna Hendry, and Taylor all had two hits for LeTourneau. The top three hitters in the YellowJacket lineup went 6-for-12 with five runs scored and two RBIs.

Leger (4-4) went six-plus innings and allowed two earned runs while scattering 10 hits and striking out five to collect the win. Cece Pace came on in the seventh and retired all three hitters she faced and struck out two.

Hendry put the YellowJackets on the board with a bunt double down the third-base line that scored Grisham in the fourth inning. Taylor then laced a double into left field that plated two runs and later in the inning Graci Hart scored on a wild pitch as LeTourneau grabbed a 4-0 lead.

After Illinois Wesleyan got a run in its half of the fourth, the YellowJackets answered with three in the fifth. Grisham produced a single and a throwing error led to Hunter Handley scoring. Murry and Lexi Hutchins followed with RBI singles to open up a 7-1 lead.

LeTourneau had 11 hits in the victory.

Gianna Certa (0-2) got the loss for the Titans. Madison Moore went 3-for-4 in the loss.
