LONGVIEW, Texas -- Lucas Mason was named the new Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at LeTourneau University, announced Vice President for Athletics Dr. Tim Sceggel.
Mason takes on the new role in the department after six years as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at NCAA Division I member Radford.
"I believe that strength and conditioning is the bedrock of successful athletics, just as faith in Jesus is the bedrock of our lives," Mason said. "I want to thank Dr. Steve Mason and Dr. Tim Sceggel for sharing this vision, and for entrusting me with building LeTourneau strength and conditioning. This is a great challenge, and I cannot wait to undertake it alongside the excellent coaching, athletic training, and administrative staff at LeTourneau."
"In Lucas, we have found a strength and performance coach who is relentless and winsome in the integration of faith, and helps us tremendously in our collective pursuit of athletic excellence," Sceggel added. "He will be a phenomenal resource to our coaches and student-athletes, especially as we convert our indoor pool to a new 6,000-square foot weight room to better serve the needs of our student-athletes and growing undergraduate enrollment."
During his tenure at Radford, Mason coached eight teams in comprehensive strength and conditioning programs. His work with student-athletes helped Radford men's tennis win a pair of Big South Tournament titles and make two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The cross country teams benefited as well with four program records and one women's Big South individual champion.
He also worked extensively with women's track and field, men's golf, and men's soccer while assisting with Radford's other teams.
Mason has worked within strength and conditioning since 2015 at Radford and at Peak Performance in various roles. Additionally, he served as an adjunct professor at Radford in the Exercise Science and Health Education department.
The role at LeTourneau is a new one, ushered in by Sceggel's leadership, as the department continues to grow and live out its mission to pursue excellence and cultivate disciples.
"Strength and conditioning can be a bridge between coaches and trainers, athletics and academics," added Mason. "I will strive for excellence in these areas every day as we work together to make LeTourneau not only the best Christian polytechnic university in the world, but the best university for student-athletes to pursue their faith while achieving academic and athletic success."
Mason earned his bachelor's degree from Radford in 2016 and a Master of Science in Strength and Performance Coaching from Southern Utah University in 2022.
He and his wife, Joy, have four children: Lucy, Eleanor, Henry, and Teddy.
