LONGVIEW, Texas --
Chanel Kemball-Cook picked the perfect time for her first collegiate goal as her score in the 86th minute evened the match and helped the LeTourneau women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with visiting Belhaven on a hot Thursday evening at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
It was the second tie for LeTourneau (0-1-2) this season and the seventh draw since the start of 2022.
Down 1-0 late in the second half, LeTourneau finally broke through. In the 86th minute, the
Tatum Fenton's free kick into the box was bobbled by Belhaven keeper Julianne Wilson and Kemball-Cook collected the loose ball and finished around the Blazer defense to knot the score.
The goal was Kemball-Cook's first of the year as the freshman leads LeTourneau in shots attempted on the year.
The teams were even through the first 40 minutes of the contest until Belhaven (1-0-1) struck in the 43rd minute. The Blazers controlled the ball in the attacking half and Sofi Restrepo worked into the box and finished for her first goal of the year to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The YellowJackets had good looks in the opening half, including a pair of chances in succession from Fenton as she took an initial shot that was blocked and followed up with an attempt that Wilson saved late in the first half.
LeTourneau outshot Belhaven, 14-13, marking the second time this season the YellowJackets have outdone their opponent in the category. Kemball-Cook led all players with three attempts, while Fenton and
Gabriella Sanchez had two each.
Kelauna Cruz was strong at the net for LeTourneau as she recorded a career-high nine saves in her 90 minutes of action.
Heather Fellows and
Alexa Polanco aided in the back and matched Cruz with 90 minutes of play in the 100-plus degree heat. Wilson collected two saves in the draw.
