LONGVIEW, Texas -- Strong pitching and timely hits were the key on Tuesday night as the LeTourneau softball team swept a doubleheader from Centenary, 5-0 and 8-4, at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
The wins puts LeTourneau (9-8) back over the .500 mark overall. The YellowJackets are 17-3 all-time against Centenary (7-12).
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 5, Centenary 0
Hailee Leger tossed a complete-game shutout,
Maddi Smith homered and the the YellowJackets took the opener by a 5-0 final.
Leger (3-4) stood tall in the circle and struck out five while scattering seven hits and stranding nine Centenary runners to collect the shutout.
LeTourneau scored single runs in five different innings. A
Kylie Grisham RBI single in the first inning plated
Maddie Flanery to put the YellowJackets ahead 1-0. In the second, it was
Mickenzie Murry's run-scoring single that scored
Leighton Landreth for a 2-0 lead.
Smith then went deep in the third. On the first pitch, Smith launched a solo home run deep to left field -- her third homer of the year -- to extend the margin to 3-0.
LeTourneau tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the final margin.
Murry went 2-for-3 with a run, three steals, and an RBI as LeTourneau had eight hits in the game.
Anna Scarbrock (4-5) got the loss for the visiting Ladies as she went five innings and allowed four runs. Bella Dominguez had two hits as Centenary had seven in the loss and left nine runners on base.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 8, Centenary 4
Laney Taylor threw a complete-game and hit a two-run home run and
Jaci Taylor had three hits as the YellowJackets completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory.
Taylor (4-1) notched her second complete game of the year in the win as she struck out a career-high eight. At the plate, Taylor went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs.
LeTourneau jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings.
Jaci Taylor had a two-run double in the second inning, while
Kenna Hendry capped the four-run second with her RBI single to make it 5-0.
In the third,
Alexa Neilon added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-0.
Centenary scored three runs in the fourth on River Boultinghouse's three-run, two-out double before Jaeden Thrasher's solo homer in the fourth made it 6-4.
Laney Taylor answered, though, in the fifth with a two-run shot to left-center field to bring the lead back to 8-4. The home run was her first of the year.
Jaci Taylor was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Payton Bauer, Hendry, Smith, and Landreth all had a hit each as the YellowJackets totaled 10.
Riley Myers (2-2) had the loss for the Ladies as she went two innings and allowed three earned runs.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau returns home on Friday for a doubleheader with Howard Payne (4 p.m.).
