Softball Breaks Out the Brooms on Howard Payne

HALLSVILLE, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team completed the sweep of the visiting Howard Payne with a 10-2 win in game one and a walk-off 5-4 win in game two of the Saturday doubleheader.

LeTourneau (12-8, 5-1 ASC) has now won five straight. 

Maddie Flanery stole a program record-breaking and ASC record-tying five bases in the first game. LeTourneau stole 11 bases as a team.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 5, Howard Payne 4

LeTourneau trailed 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning with one away.

Howard Payne looked to add to the lead with runners on the corners. LeTourneau turned a nice double play as Lilly Longoria fielded the ball cleanly, stepped on second, and threw to Leighton Landreth at first.

Jenna Carter got things rolling in the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle.

Flanery marked her first hit of the game at the right time with an RBI triple to right center field, scoring Carter.

Kylie Grisham then doubled down the third base line and scored Flanery to make it 4-3.

Landreth then drew a walk and pranced out toward second, getting caught in a run down allowing Grisham to come home from third and tie the game up (4-4) with a double-steal.

In the extra frame, Lexi Hutchins was still in the circle and went three up and three down forcing two ground outs and a pop out.

Hutchins then picked up the bat and hit a ball down the third base line for a double.

It was then a walk-off double from Carter that made the difference, scoring Hutchins to win 5-4.

Hutchins (2-2) with 8.0 innings, of work allowed 10 hits, three earned runs, and got five strikeouts.

Bree Cason (6-8) was in the circle for Howard Payne and went 7.2 innings, allowed nine hits, five earned runs, three walks, and got three strikeouts.  

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 10, Howard Payne 2

LeTourneau started with a one, two, three inning in the top of the first allowing the offense to get started quickly.

Flanery led off with a walk and a stolen base. Jaci Taylor then walked and a double steal took place as Flanery went to third and Taylor took second.

Kylie Grisham hit a sacrifice fly out to center field scoring Flanery to make it 1-0.

Maddi Smith then walked and stole second with Taylor already at third.

Landreth hit a sacrifice fly of her own to make it 2-0.

Mickenzie Murry then walked and got herself into a rundown to allow Smith to score the third run for LeTourneau.

Flanery got on with a single her next time up and tallied another stolen base in the bottom of the third. 

Grisham proceeded to trade places with Flanery with her stand-up double out to left field to put LeTourneau up 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth Hutchins kept the RBI train rolling as she doubled to left field, scoring Landreth.

Laney Taylor then grounded out to score Hutchins for an RBI of her own.

Jaci Taylor then reached on a throwing error from the shortstop and scored Hutchins to make it 7-0.

Grisham followed that with an RBI single to bring Flanery home. LeTourneau led by eight after four innings.

Howard Payne extended the game another inning after Ashley Pruiett hit an RBI single that would eventually score two runs. 

LeTourneau would tack on two more runs off of four hits in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.

Laney Taylor (5-1) got the win with her 6.0 innings pitched. She allowed five hits, two runs, zero earned, and got four strikeouts.

Kayla Camacho (2-5) started in the circle as she allowed four hits, seven runs, six earned, and got three strikeouts in 3.0 innings.

Sydney West came in relief for 2.1 innings allowing nine hits, three runs, two earned, and got a strikeout.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau will head out to Belton to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday with the doubleheader slated for 4 p.m.
