SHREVEPORT, La. -- The LeTourneau baseball team got back on the winning side with a game two victory on Tuesday night as the YellowJackets split a midweek doubleheader at Centenary.
LeTourneau (13-20) took the nightcap, 5-4, after dropping the opener by a 13-4 final.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 5, Centenary 4
Blake Vice and
Xander Nabors both homered and the bullpen worked out of late jams to hold on for a 5-4 victory in Tuesday's finale.
LeTourneau had five hits in the game, including two from
Devin Greaff, but made the most of opportunities.
Vice gave the YellowJackets a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo shot to left-center field. The home run was his fourth of the year.
The YellowJackets extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the third.
Dane Jones produced an RBI single before a passed ball and a wild pitch allowed two more LeTourneau runs to come across.
After Centenary cut the margin to 4-2, Nabors crushed a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a solo homer in the fifth to make it 5-2. The blast was his fifth of the year.
In the bottom of the fifth, Centenary threatened but Jones threw out a runner trying to score to keep it a 5-2 game. The Gents left the bases loaded in the fourth as
Calvin Lopez got Jobee Boone to strike out to end the inning.
Centenary (17-12) put together another rally in the sixth. A two-run single trimmed the YellowJacket lead to 5-4 and the Gents had the bases loaded with one out, but
Dylan Cortes struck out back-to-back hitters to preserve the one-run lead.
Cortes then tossed a perfect seventh inning to record his first save of the year. He went the final 2.1 innings and struck out three.
Lane Holman (1-0) made the start and tossed two shutout innings before giving way to
Cade Hathorn who allowed just one run in one inning.
Hank Bennett (0-2) collected the loss for the Gents. Boone and Walker Wicklund each had two hits in the loss.
GAME ONE: Centenary 13, LeTourneau 4
Centenary struck first and pulled away late for a 13-4 win in Tuesday's first game.
Jaggar Vaughn went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to lead the YellowJackets. His home run came in the third innings and gave LeTourneau a 4-3 lead.
Tyler Hedin added an RBI single in the second and
Kevin Soto delivered an RBI ground out in the third.
Centenary struck first on a three-run homer from Alex Miller in the first inning. After LeTourneau grabbed a 4-3 lead on Vaughn's homer, the Gents scored three times in the third to take a 6-4 lead.
In the sixth, Centenary broke the game open with seven runs.
Riley Davis made the start for LeTourneau and went two innings.
TJ Spitdowski,
Zac Schneider, and
Jonathan Burton all had scoreless outings from the bullpen.
Tyler Herrera (2-1) got the win for Centenary, while Braeden Morse had three hits.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau hosts Hardin-Simmons for an ASC series starting on Friday (4 p.m., doubleheader).
