MY LETU STORY: Mickenzie Murry

NOTE: This is part of a series on letuathletics.com with feature stories written by senior student-athletes, or in their final year, about their time at LeTourneau and the impact it has made on them.

When I was asked to do this feature on the impact LeTourneau has made on me, a wave of emotions hit me. First, because I cannot believe my time here as a student-athlete came to an end.

It feels like just yesterday I was graduating high school and committing to play softball at LeTourneau University. Four years here has flown by faster than I ever could have imagined. Secondly, it hit me because I thought to myself, “What impact has this school not made on me?” This university has shaped me into the person I am today in more ways than I can even count.

It has shaped me as an athlete, as a student, but most importantly as a Christian and in my walk with Christ.

I have been able to grow and learn to not put my self-worth in a sport, but instead put my identity in Christ and what He calls me to do. I am so thankful that God put LeTourneau University in His will for my life.

My story at LeTourneau starts in 2020, I just graduated high school and planned on going to a different university and I was not going to play softball. However, I felt God telling me that was not the plan He had in store for me.

In the middle of the summer, I completely changed all my plans and found myself committed to play softball at a small school in East Texas. I knew nothing about the school, but I knew God was placing me here for a reason. When I got here my freshman year, I found out why His plan is far better than my own. Little did I know God was placing me in a community with teammates, coaches, professors, and friends that would soon become my family away from home.

This school has given me teammates who love me and have taught me to play the game I love selflessly. It has given me coaches who love me like I am their own and have helped me grow on and off the field in so many ways.

LeTourneau has given me professors who have mentored me in more than just the classroom. The impact that each person has made in my life is something that I never would have experienced anywhere else.

Being a YellowJacket gave me the opportunity to continue playing the sport I fell in love with many years ago. It can be hard to see it in the moment, but when I look back on my years as a student-athlete, I am not going to remember the strikeouts, the losses, the bad games, I am going to remember all of the memories I have made with the people at this university on and off the field. I have been able to grow and learn to not put my self-worth in a sport, but instead put my identity in Christ and what He calls me to do.

I am so thankful that God put LeTourneau University in His will for my life.
