WHEATON, Ill. -- The LeTourneau women's soccer team fell to Carroll in the season opener, 4-0, at the Bob Baptista Invitational at Wheaton College on Friday afternoon.  

Netminder Kelauna Cruz led the defensive effort with six saves in the match, with Gabriella Sanchez and Heather Shaw recording the lone shots for the Jackets offense. Clarissa Martinez was also an iron woman on the defensive side, being one of two non-keepers to play all 90 minutes.

In the first half, the LeTourneau offense had some life early, with Sanchez firing the first shot for the YellowJackets in the 15th minute, but it redirected out to the right of the net. Cruz picked up all six of her saves in the half, which kept LeTourneau in the thick of the match.  

During the course of the second half, the freshman Shaw entered her first collegiate match in the 73rd minute and promptly made an impact. She saw an opportunity and aimed a shot on net, but Carroll keeper Caitlin Fitzimmons was just able to keep it out to preserve the lead.

Mari Sagstad led the Pioneers with two goals in three opportunities, while Grace Tumilty and Ally Scoma also added a goal apiece. Jessica Stepien played all 90 minutes on defense and Fitzsimmons recorded a one-save clean sheet.
