JACKSON, Miss. -- Millsaps was too much for LeTourneau baseball in the season opener as they fell, 11-4, at Twenty Field in Jackson.
The winning pitcher was Nick Tarantino (2-0) for Millsaps, while
Aman Patel (0-1) got the loss for LeTourneau.
The scoring started for the YellowJackets when
Dane Jones drove in a pair of runs in the third inning, cutting the Millsaps lead down to three, 5-2.
That would be as close as LeTourneau would get, though, as the Majors took control from that point on.
In the seventh inning,
Jack Kale would add his first collegiate hit and RBI on a 3-2 pitch. Kale, the freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, ended his collegiate debut 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
Jones would bring home the fourth and final LeTourneau run in the ninth on an RBI single.Â
Another freshman,
Austin Wiederhold, from Montgomery, Texas, had a solid collegiate debut for the YellowJackets as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. The double, his first collegiate hit, came in the sixth inning.Â
Graduate transfer
Brice Cagle and freshman
Cody Brady collected their first base knocks as YellowJackets in this game as well. Cagle, who transferred in this season from Ozarks, went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Brady, who hails from Flower Mound, Texas, singled as a pinch hitter in his only plate appearance of the game.
Tarantino, the Millsaps starter, went 5.2 innings with 14 punchouts, while right fielder Bradley Pelle and catcher Mason Morgan had three hits apiece for the Majors.
