LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau softball's late-inning comeback fell short as they were swept by Hardin-Simmons, 10-0 and 8-7.
The YellowJackets (12-18, 4-4 ASC) did get back-to-back-to-back homers in game two, but the Hardin-Simmons (21-4, 5-1 ASC) offense proved too much to overcome.
GAME ONE: Hardin-Simmons 10, LeTourneau 0
LeTourneau's offense could not find its footing after an early deficit as they fell, 10-0, in a run-rule shortened game one.
Kirstin Ferguson (5-7) was handed the loss, although she struck out three in 4.1 innings of work.
After a scoreless draw in the first two innings, the Cowgirls got the first run on the board in the third inning to take the early lead, and then Cowgirl hurler Gabby Montanez prevented the LeTourneau offense from getting going.
The YellowJackets got hits from
Jaci Taylor and
Jenna Rosson, but they were scattered across two different innings.
Montanez (12-0) got the win for the Cowgirls, throwing all five shutout innings.
GAME TWO: Hardin-Simmons 8, LeTourneau 7
LeTourneau's late comeback came up just short as they lost 8-7 in game two.
The YellowJackets took an early 3-1 lead after
Jaci Taylor,
Kylie Grisham, and
Leighton Landreth hit a trio of consecutive home runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Taylor's was her third of the season and increased her team-leading RBI total to 33, while Grisham's was her third of the season and 26th RBI of the campaign. Landreth's was one of her three RBI knocks in the game, and her third homer in the last five games.
After the Cowgirls responded with six unanswered runs, LeTourneau forged a comeback over the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on
Jenna Carter's two-RBI double to left field.
However, Hardin-Simmons would add a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, and while the YellowJackets got another RBI hit from Landreth to close it to one in the bottom of the inning, a line drive off the bat of
Rylie Shipp stayed up just long enough for Lindsey Ratcliffe to make the grab.
Laney Taylor (4-9) got the loss for LeTourneau in a complete game effort, while Gabby Montanez (13-0) picked up her second win of the day in relief.
