Baseball Drops DH to UT Dallas on Senior Day; Clinches Share of ASC Title

LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau baseball team dropped both games in their Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Conrad-Vernon Field. The YellowJackets fell in game one, 11-5, and dropped game two by a 7-6 final.

Sixteen YellowJacket seniors were honored in the ceremony that followed the games. The seniors honored were Dane Jones, Aman Patel, Ben Jones, Brice Cagle, Issac Price, Xander Nabors, Kevin Wright, Trent Shipman, Hayden Norris, Carlos Flores Jr, Lane Holman, Zac Schneider, Riley Davis, Dalton Pickett, Zach Zarko, and Landon Stocks.

LeTourneau (21-18, 11-5 ASC) also clinched a share of the ASC regular season title after East Texas Baptist lost three games in a series at Mary Hardin-Baylor during the weekend. The YellowJackets earned a share of the title for the first time in program history and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's ASC Tournament.

GAME ONE: UT Dallas 11, LeTourneau 5

In game one of the doubleheader, the visiting Comets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. These four runs all came in the opening frame.

But after a rocky start, the YellowJackets slowly fought back, bringing the score to 5-2. The LeTourneau scoring started in the first inning with an RBI triple for Luke Land, and was followed up by a big fly for Dane Jones in the fifth inning.

The visiting Comets would eventually stretch their lead to 9-2 in the sixth inning. LeTourneau answered in the same inning with an Austin Wiederhold RBI single, and Zach Zarko scored on a balk by the Comets pitcher Greg Jennings. This moved the score to 9-5.

UT Dallas would tack on two more runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 11-5. Dalton Pickett (2-3) was dealt the loss for the YellowJackets.

GAME TWO: UT Dallas 7, LeTourneau 6

Game two was a dogfight with both teams fiercely battling back and forth. The Comets struck first, taking a 1-0 lead.

The YellowJackets quickly answered with a run of their own. Dane Jones, the newly crowned LeTourneau all-time RBI leader hit into an RBI fielders choice to tie the game.

Lucas Rexin, Jagger Self, and Trent McCown would strike next for the Comets, giving the visitors a 5-1 lead.

Luke Land, Jack Kale, and Norris would bring the YellowJackets surging back all contributing clutch RBI at bats. Bring the score to 5-4 in the fifth inning.

Rexin would answer with a two-run homer, giving UT Dallas a 7-5 lead.

Dane Jones answered Rexin with a homer of his own, his fifty-ninth career home run. This homer also added to his RBI total, Jones ends his final regular season with 192 career RBIs, which tops the LeTourneau record books.

Despite a bases loaded opportunity, the YellowJackets were unable to pull off late-inning heroics. This one ended 7-6.
