LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau baseball secured a four-game sweep of conference rival Howard Payne with a 6-2 win at Conrad-Vernon Field on Monday afternoon.
The bullpen game worked to near perfection for the YellowJackets (15-12), who used five hurlers and scattered two runs and six hits.
Will Podsednik (3-0) opened the game and earned the win via three one-run innings, striking out three.
The offense set the tone early with a pair of runs in the first inning, one via a wild pitch, and the other from an RBI single from
Xander Nabors.
After Howard Payne loaded the bases and got one run across in the third inning, Podsednik got an emphatic strikeout of Landon Prestage to get out of the inning and hold onto the lead.
The YellowJackets would add a run in the fourth inning off of another wild pitch, but Howard Payne again threatened, loading the bases in the sixth.
Camden Miller would put out the fire, however, getting a swinging strikeout on a frisbee slider to keep LeTourneau in front.
Howard Payne would mount one more offensive strike in the top of the eighth inning, getting men on second and third with one out and needing a run to tie the game.
The bullpen stepped up again.
Landon Stocks blew a bevy of fastballs by the following two hitters, including one with a little extra mustard on the final swinging strike, to preserve the narrow 3-2 lead.
The offense responded, getting three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Austin Wiederhold brought in one of those runs via an RBI hit by pitch, and then another wild pitch brought home the second.
Zach Baker added the finishing touch with a straight steal of home, making it 6-2 going into the final frame.
Frank Maestri closed it out, striking out one and getting a foul popout to
Ben Jones at first to end the series.
John Garza and Devin Smith had multi-hit efforts for the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne, and Kasey Swan (0-2) pitched five solid innings, but got the loss.
