LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau softball sent their graduates home winners as they swept Mary Hardin-Baylor, 6-5 and 10-2, on Saturday afternoon.
Nine graduates,
Kensie Baldwin,
Payton Bauer,
Jaci Taylor,
Kirstin Ferguson,
Lexi Dodson,
Leighton Landreth,
Alexa Neilon,
Laney Taylor, and
Kylie Grisham, all played roles in helping the YellowJackets take the sweep.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 6, UMHB 5
Maddie Flanery's walk-off bunt single gave the YellowJackets the win in game one, 6-5.
After the Cru took a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, the Jackets offense found their groove, as
Kylie Grisham,
Leighton Landreth and
Maddi Smith hit solo homers to assume a 3-1 lead.
Jaci Taylor would add another RBI in the fourth inning on a double to center field to make it 4-1.
UMHB would add their own counter-punch, however, tying the game at four with a three-run sixth inning.
Laney Taylor punched back, quite literally, with a bullet of a line-drive homer to right field, helping give LeTourneau a 5-4 lead. That lead was short-lived, however, as a bunt single from Tori Skinner scored the tying run in the top of the seventh.
The Jackets had one more haymaker left in them, though, as
Raina Doggett led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center, followed by an
Alexa Neilon bunt single, to put runners at first and third with nobody out.
After Neilon stole second, Flanery stepped up to the plate, concluding the matter on an 0-1 count with her walk-off bunt single.
Taylor (6-12) earned her 18th career win, which ranks sixth in program history. Ella Gamblin (3-2) got the loss for the Cru.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 10, UMHB 2 (5 innings)
An eight-run bottom of the fifth inning, capped off by a
Laney Taylor walk-off single, gave LeTourneau the run-rule shortened 10-2 win in five innings to take the doubleheader sweep.
A comeback effort was the story of this game, as the YellowJackets overcame an early two-run deficit to score 10 unanswered runs.
Kirstin Ferguson (6-11) earned the win behind five solid innings in her final start at the LETU Softball Field, striking out two.
The comeback started in the fourth inning, as
Lilly Longoria doubled to left field to drive home the first run.
Jenna Carter then drove in the tying run with a single to right-center.
Then, the fifth inning commenced.
Landreth began the frame with a leadoff moonshot to left-center field, making it 3-2. After the next two hitters got out, Flanery and
Jaci Taylor added RBI singles, and Taylor's was particularly momentous as it moved her into fourth place in program history for RBIs in a single season (37).
Landreth came back up again later in the inning and added another pair of RBIs on a double to left-center field, and then
Laney Taylor closed the deal with her hard-hit walk-off single to second base.
Beth Ann Johnston (1-1) was handed the loss in relief, while Lindsey Polleschultz and Beiley Frenzel added RBI hits for the Cru.
