SHERMAN, Texas -- The LeTourneau baseball team avoided a series sweep with a 13-3, run-rule, victory in the series finale at Austin College to conclude Sunday's doubleheader at Sherman High School.
Austin (2-2, 2-1 SCAC) took the first game on Sunday, 9-7, before LeTourneau (3-3, 1-2 SCAC)Â scored a season-high 13 runs on 14 hits in the final game.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 13, Austin 3
Jonah McDaniel had two doubles and three RBIs to lead a 14-hit attack for LeTourneau as the YellowJackets took the series finale, 13-3, in seven innings.
Caleb Sandusky went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while
Jack Kale, McDaniel, and
Zach Baker all had two hits apiece. McDaniel had five hits total in the doubleheader, including four doubles and five RBIs.
McDaniel put the YellowJackets on the board first with a two-run double in the top of the first that plated
Chris Savage and
Austin Wiederhold. Austin rallied to even the score at 2-2 after two innings.
LeTourneau scored 11 runs over the final four innings of the game.
Cody Brady gave LeTourneau the lead for good with an RBI single in the third before Sandusky delivered his RBI single to make it 4-2. McDaniel was back at it in the fourth with another RBI double and Savage later scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Kale and
Blake Vice added two-RBI doubles in the fifth to break open the game. Baker produced an RBI double of his own in the sixth and
Luke Land had a two-run single in the seventh to cap the scoring.
LeTourneau had six doubles in the game.
Camden Miller (1-1) picked up the win in relief as he tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just one run on two hits with five strikeouts.
Spencer Alexander and
Cruz Cox had scoreless outings to finish the game. LeTourneau pitching allowed only four hits in the win.
Austin starter Gavin Brady (0-1) got the loss after allowing four runs on six hits. Desmond Squalls had two of Austin's four hits.
GAME ONE: Austin 9, LeTourneau 7
LeTourneau got out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning, but Austin scored nine runs over the middle innings to come back and take a 9-7 win to clinch the series win.
LeTourneau looked strong early as Kale delivered an RBI double in the top of the first followed by a McDaniel RBI double that plated Kale to make it 2-0. Baker added an infield RBI single in the second before tacking an another RBI single in the third to stretch the YellowJacket lead to 5-0.
Austin responded and scored four runs in the third, highlighted by run-scoring doubles from Kaden Stegent and Squalls before an RBI single from Carlos Michinaux made it 5-4.Â
LeTourneau answered with a McDaniel RBI single and a Land sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-4.
Walks hurt LeTourneau in the fourth and fifth innings. A pair of bases loaded walks in each inning helped stage the rally for Austin and an RBI fielder's choice from Caleb Staggs in the fifth gave the host Roos an 8-7 lead.
LeTourneau had at least one runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not scratch across any runs.
McDaniel was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Kale and Baker had two hits each for LeTourneau.
Cullen Osterloh (1-1) got the loss, while
Ryan Brewer and Miller combined for 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Matthew Nguyen (1-0) earned the win in relief as he went two innings. Colten Millsap (1) picked up the four-inning save.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau returns home on Friday to open a three-game series vs. nationally-ranked McMurry (6 p.m.).
