Late-Inning Heroics Leads Baseball to Comeback Victory

LONGVIEW, Texas -- After trailing 5-0 through the first five, LeTourneau baseball plated eight runs in the final three innings to secure an 8-6 comeback victory in front of a home crowd at Conrad-Vernon Field.

After trimming the lead to just one after the home half of the seventh, LeTourneau (7-4, 5-2 SCAC) brought home three in the eighth inning to take the series opener from Texas Lutheran (8-2, 5-2 SCAC).

Camden Miller (2-1) threw two shutout innings to close out the game, earning the winning decision in the process.

Chris Savage went 2-for-5, scoring a pair of runs and bringing home Zach Baker for the game-tying run in the eighth. Blake Vice had 2 RBIs in the win, via a sacrifice fly in the seventh, followed by a bases-loaded walk to bring home the go-ahead run an inning later.

Baker, Austin Wiederhold, Jack Kale, Luke Land, and Cody Brady all collected a hit apiece for the YellowJackets.

The Bulldogs struck first, scoring a pair in the top of the first to lead 2-0, but Clayton Holt was able to get out of the jam before any further damage was dealt. Texas Lutheran then extended its lead to 5-0 thanks to a bases-clearing double to right field from Caleb Small.

Holt went four innings in the no-decision start, allowing five runs -- four earned -- and struck out four.

After an eventual 6-0 lead, the comeback began. McDaniel scored on a miscue in the outfield to bring home LeTourneau's first run of the game in the sixth.

Wiederhold reached on an error, followed by Kale and Savage hitting back-to-back singles to load the bases for McDaniel. The cleanup batter collected an RBI single to bring home the first run of the inning, followed by Vice's sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.

Savage scored on a wild pitch before McDaniel was brought home thanks to a second mistake by the Bulldog infield.

Miller made quick work of Texas Lutheran in the top of the eighth, before Savage and Vice produced their clutch RBIs in the home half to give the YellowJackets the lead. Spencer Alexander made it eight unanswered runs after getting plunked with bases loaded.

Miller went three up, three down in the ninth, securing the series-opening win for the Jackets.

Ben Mayorga pitched three innings in relief for LeTourneau, allowing one run and striking out a batter.

Isaiah Ramirez went 6.2 innings in the start for Texas Lutheran, but it was Parker Schutte (1-2) who allowed the go-ahead run in relief, earning the loss.

Small went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, and Brayden Sprencel collected three hits to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
